What is fencing?

Fencing is a traditional combat sport that has evolved from 16th century duelling. It has been in the modern Olympics since the beginning 1896, and has gained a worldwide popularity in all three weapons – foil, epee and sabre. It is a fun and challenging way to get in shape – both physically and mentally. This is the reason why sometimes it is called “physical chess”.

About us

The fencing club Kalpaveljet was established in 1956. With us you can fence mostly epee, but also foil and sabre and train with our three coaches and over 100 fencers. You can train just for fun, or competitively - nationally and internationally.

The club organizes courses and sparrings almost every day of the week and for every age group - from children to veterans (+50 years). We train in our fencing hall in Nääshalli, in the centre of Tampere, and once a week in Jyväskylä and Hämeenkyrö

How to start?

We organize courses for beginners 3-5 times a year in Tampere, Jyväskylä, and Hämeenkyrö.

Next courses for beginners:

Tampere: two-day beginners course on January 27th and February 3rd 2024.

Hämeenkyrö: beginners course in January-February 2024 (more information coming soon)

For further information and binding registration please contact: Coach Hristo Popov, hristopop@gmail.com, 0505696042 (Tampere) or Suvi Lehtonen, suvi.m.lehtonen@gmail.com, 0443585495 (Hämeenkyrö and Jyväskylä).

To start training all you need is indoor shoes and normal sports clothing. In the beginning you can borrow weapons and protective clothing from the club, but if you wish to continue fencing, we recommend you to buy your own equipment (weapon, bodywire and glove) as soon as possible.

The cost of the beginners course is 70-100 euros depending on the duration of the course.

If you are not able to participate in the course or want to get started immediately, you may ask for private lessons from our coaches.

After finishing the course for beginners you have the possibility to join our courses for advanced fencers (see the schedule below):

Monday 17.30-18.30 (children  under 14)
Monday 18.30-20.00 (adults and children +13)

Saturday 11.30-13.00 (in Hämeenkyrö)
